Job Description

Nevada State College (NSC) invites applications for the position of Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness of Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) First-Year Advisor/First-Year Recruiter. This position will split their time, 50% focused on the federally funded Nevada GEAR UP First-Year Advisor responsibilities, and 50% on Nevada State College First-Year recruitment.

As part of the GEAR UP responsibilities, this position will work in collaboration with the GEAR UP College Coordinator and GEAR UP Specialists to identify and provide high-quality and relevant programming, including financial literacy, goal setting, social-emotional learning, career exploration, academic assistance, STEM education, and college readiness activities including summer bridge/transition programming to GEAR UP students in grades 11-12 and parents, as appropriate. In addition, this position will work in conjunction with the GEAR UP College Coordinator to provide FAFSA completion and college application events in GEAR UP high schools throughout the local community and the State of Nevada.

This position will also support the recruitment efforts for the Office of Admissions and Recruitment. The Recruiter is responsible for presenting information about Nevada State College to prospective students, parents, counselors, school staff, and community members via presentations and appointments at high schools, college/career fairs, community fairs, and in-office appointments. The Recruiter provides information to prospective students about Admissions, degree programs, financial aid, and scholarships, and the benefits of earning a degree at NSC. The recruiter will work closely with the Associate Director of Recruitment to create content for marketing materials. This position is responsible for helping meet and exceed NSC's enrollment goals set by the institutional strategic enrollment plan.

This position is not eligible for an Alternative Work Arrangement. Unless stated otherwise, all positions are required Nevada residency and on-site work.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Provide in-person services to students in the designated high school's College Corner.
  • Provide virtual services to students as appropriate.
  • Research, develop, and prepare college readiness-related materials and/or lessons for students and parents.
  • Collaborate with GEAR UP Specialists and College Coordinators to provide additional in-person services as needed.
  • Participate in GEAR UP College and Career Fairs.
  • Provide summer bridge/transition programming for high school seniors, either by GEAR UP-specific design or as part of the institution's existing bridge/transition program, with GEAR UP-specific content added.
  • Prepare documentation of services provided (attendance, hours, details, etc.).
  • Entering GEAR UP service data into the GEARS database after the conclusion of the event/service.
  • Submitting post-service evaluations.
  • Conduct college presentations to prospective students and parents at high schools, community events.
  • Provide information about degree programs, admissions, financial aid, scholarships, and student services to students and parents.
  • Conduct on-site admission sessions at high schools and community colleges to determine admissibility of students.
  • Represent NSC in outreach events.
  • Coordinate on-campus events other campus resources on an as-needed basis.


Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • One year experience in comparable profession.
  • Current and unrestricted driver's license, current registered car.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (NSC does not sponsor employment-related visas).
  • Demonstrated commitment to a diverse, nontraditional, first generation student population.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Must be able to pass the Clark County School District background check required to obtain a school district badge.

Salary & Benefits

Budgeted salary for this position is $47,452.00. Nevada State College offers excellent benefits, including 15.50% retirement match, 24 annual leave days, beginning balance of 30 sick leave days, 11 paid holidays, educational benefits, and the choice of three health insurance plans that can be supplemented with flexible spending accounts or health savings accounts.
